What “ego dissolution” means in research
In psychedelic research, ego dissolution generally refers to a temporary weakening or loss of the usual sense of being a separate, bounded self. It can include reduced self–other boundaries, diminished ownership over thoughts or perceptions, and a sense that ordinary identity has become less fixed. The term is a description of reported experience rather than a diagnosis, and it is often assessed with self-report measures after an experience has ended.
The language has roots in psychology and philosophy, but its contemporary research use is narrower than everyday talk about “losing the ego.” The idea of ego death is commonly used in popular accounts, while studies may focus on a defined questionnaire construct and its relationship to intensity, context, and later interpretation.
That distinction matters when considering ibogaine. A careful orientation to ibogaine-related selfhood begins with the broader discussion of ego and ibogaine, while the site’s independent resource on ibogaine and safety keeps subjective language separate from established findings.
